Today’s art is the shrine gate for “Itsukushima Shrine”, on the island of Miyajima in Hiroshima. The wording at the top of the gate (鳥居 torii) says the name of the shrine, “厳島神社” (Itsukushima Jinja).

The island of Miyajima (literally, “shrine island”) is very spiritual in nature and has an interesting history. The gate to the shrine actually sits in the sea. This version is what it would look like at high tide. During low tide, you could actually walk out and stand underneath it.

Miyajima “Itsukushima Shrine Gate” by Keith J. Eldridge

The inspiration for this design came from a picture I took while Kayaking with my son around Miyajima. We took a tour with Paddle Park and were able to kayak right through shrine gate! It is a wonderful experience and I highly recommend it if you get the opportunity.

I created this design as vector art in Affinity Designer for iPad. I’d be happy to share, so if you’d like to use it, just ask.
